Helical magnetic structure and the anomalous and topological Hall effects in epitaxial B20 Fe$_{1-y}$Co$_y$Ge films

2018

Epitaxial films of the B20-structure compound Fe1−yCoyGe were grown by molecular beam epitaxy on Si (111) substrates. The magnetization varied smoothly from the bulklike values of one Bohr magneton per Fe atom for FeGe to zero for nonmagnetic CoGe. The chiral lattice structure leads to a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI), and the films' helical magnetic ground state was confirmed using polarized neutron reflectometry measurements. The pitch of the spin helix, measured by this method, varies with Co content y and diverges at y∼0.45. This indicates a zero crossing of the DMI, which we reproduced in calculations using first-principles methods. We also measured the longitudinal and Hall r…

Spintronic properties of Li1.5Mn0.5Z (Z=As, Sb) compounds in the Cu2Sb structure

2015

Abstract We have investigated the spintronic properties of two formula units of Li1.5Mn0.5Z (Z=As, Sb), in the Cu2Sb tetragonal crystal structure based on first-principles density-functional theory calculations, at, and near, their equilibrium (minimum total energy) lattice constants. Two groups of configurations, A and B, are formed for each type of alloy by interchanging Mn with each Li located at four different positions with respect to Li4Z2. Mn has four nearest neighbors in group-A and has one nearest neighbor in group-B. The bonding features of the alloys are compared to the ionic bonding in Li4Z2, and the tetragonal structure of cubic LiMnZ. The magnetic moments of these compounds ar…

Electrong-factor determinations in Penning traps

2013

The magnetic moment of the electron, expressed by the g-factor in units of the Bohr magneton, is a key quantity in the theory of quantum electrodynamics (QED). Experiments using single particles confined in Penning traps have provided very precise values of the g-factor for the free electron as well as the electron bound in hydrogen-like ions. In this paper the status of these experiments is reviewed. The results allow testing calculations of higher order Feynman diagrams. Comparison of experimental and theoretical results for free and bound particles show no discrepancy within the limits of error, thus representing to date the most sensitive test of QED. Moreover, the g-factor provides a u…

A non-resonant dark-side solution to the solar neutrino problem

2001

We re-analyse spin-flavour precession solutions to the solar neutrino problem in the light of the recent SNO CC result as well as the 1258--day Super-Kamiokande data and the upper limit on solar anti-neutrinos. In a self-consistent magneto-hydrodynamics approach the resulting scheme has only 3 effective parameters: $\Delta m^2$, $\mu B_\perp$ and the neutrino mixing angle $\theta$. We show how a rates-only analysis for fixed $\mu B_\perp$ slightly favours spin-flavour precession (SFP) solutions over oscillations (OSC). In addition to the resonant solution (RSFP for short), there is a new non-resonant solution (NRSFP) in the ``dark-side''. Both RSFP and NRSFP lead to flat recoil energy spect…

Isotope dependence of the Zeeman effect in lithium-like calcium

2016

The magnetic moment μ of a bound electron, generally expressed by the g-factor μ=−g μB s ħ−1 with μB the Bohr magneton and s the electron's spin, can be calculated by bound-state quantum electrodynamics (BS-QED) to very high precision. The recent ultra-precise experiment on hydrogen-like silicon determined this value to eleven significant digits, and thus allowed to rigorously probe the validity of BS-QED. Yet, the investigation of one of the most interesting contribution to the g-factor, the relativistic interaction between electron and nucleus, is limited by our knowledge of BS-QED effects. By comparing the g-factors of two isotopes, it is possible to cancel most of these contributions an…
